I got into cycling about four years ago — my son wanted a bike so I thought I would give it a go. Then my friend, whose husband is a member of CRC, got a hybrid and we started to go out pootling around Hessle. I was on a mountain bike from Toys R Us and was way behind Caroline, so I bought a hybrid for myself and we continued to pootle. But it wasn’t enough — I wanted greater distance and longer rides, so Caroline’s husband suggested the Sunday Girls.
I went for my first ride on the hottest day of the year, on my hybrid. I took no water, had no gloves, and not a clue what to expect. I got my first ever cycling tan lines that day and was exhausted, but I did 22 miles on that hybrid and had a massive smile on my face the whole way round, even when I had to get off and walk.
Everyone waited for me at the top of the hills (they were massive hills, we’re talking 2% incline here) and I was so grateful. The support I received then, and now, is amazing! I was well and truly bitten by the cycling bug.
I got my road bike in February after saying I would never go to drop handles, and a few weeks ago I got my clips after saying I would never be physically attached to my bike. I have had tumbles, the photos of which the Sunday Girls have seen, but I couldn’t be happier! It’s been hard for me these past few months as some of you will know, but cycling with the sun on my face and the wind in my hair has made it that bit easier (I am sitting here writing this with tears streaming down my face — cycling makes you nuts folks). My aim is to be as lithe and svelte as Chris Froome — failing that, a bit thinner will do! — and to continue with the fab friends I have made as a member of this club.
